Our Executive Director

MEET OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, DR. Christopher Small!

With a passion for educational administration and academic success, Dr. Christopher Small has made it his personal goal to build self-esteem, character, leadership, and integrity in all students he encounters. Dr. Small began his work in the public school system as a 5th grade Science teacher and Dean of Students at Jefferson Elementary School in Monticello, FL. His time and dedication while at Jefferson Elementary School resulted in the school doubling the science proficiency scores and moving from an “F” to a “C” in one year. Subsequently, he was hired in Leon County School District, where he worked as a middle school mathematics teacher, Academic Data Coach, and eventually three years as the Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction at R. Frank Nims Middle School. His work with the teachers, students, and parents while at Nims also moved the only “F” rated school in Leon County to a “C” in one year and he established the Follow Me to College career readiness track.

During the Spring of 2012 he earned his PhD in Educational Leadership and Administration from Florida State University, was recognized by the University Council of Educational Administration as a Barbara Jackson Research Scholar, and was appointed as the Proud Principal of Springwood Elementary School in Tallahassee, FL. During his five years at Springwood Elementary, he dedicated his talents to building a rich school climate with College-Prep Traditions and Expectations. Under his leadership Springwood was recognized as an AVID Showcase Elementary School, AVID Conference Featured Educational Speaker, and a Model PBIS School and moved from a “C” to a “B”.

In July of 2017, he was appointed as the new principal of Augusta Raa Middle School for the Arts in Tallahassee, FL. During his first year at Raa Middle School the school grade went from one percentage point from a C to four percentage points from an A and he has worked to reduce the number of discipline referrals from just under 1200 referrals per year by fifty percent. He has also been recognized as the 2020 Florida State Opening Nights Arts Advocate Award Recipient.

Dr. Small became the Director of the Online Educational Leadership and Administration Program at Florida State University in Fall 2020 and has continued to impact the leadership trajectory of Florida educational leaders. Under his leadership, the program has advanced in rankings by US News and World Report and continues to be a leader across the state in first-attempt pass rates for the Florida Educational Leadership Exam. He was also recognized by the College of Education with the 2023 Graduate Teaching Award and Imogene Mixson Leadership Award. Dr. Small was also selected as the recipient of the 2024 Florida State University Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Award for his dedication to the university and the surrounding community.

Dr. Small was appointed in June of 2024 as the Interim Executive Director of Florida State University Lab School and is committed to continuing to build a legacy of exemplary teaching, research, and service one student and teacher at a time.
