All-MIAA - Football - 2023 (2024)

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. -- At the conclusion of the 2023 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) regular season, head coaches from the seven MIAA football-sponsoring institutions voted on All-MIAA awards.

Alma College's Carter St. John was voted the MIAA Most Valuable Offensive Player, while Albion College's Nick Fannon was selected as the MIAA's Most Valuable Defensive Player. SirQuarius Ball of The University of Olivet received the Pete Schmidt Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award.

Sophom*ore quarterback Carter St. John led the Scots to their second-straight MIAA Championship after goingundefeated in league play and tallying an overall record of 10-0. In conference play alone, St. John concluded the regular season as the league leader with a .764 completion percentage, 1,696 passing yards, and 19 passing touchdowns. St. John also totaled 97 pass completions , 193 rushing yards, and four rushing touchdowns. He was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on September 26 and was selected as the MIAA Football Offensive Athlete of the Week twice this season.

Briton senior defensive lineman Nick Fannon assisted Albion to a 3-3 mark in conference competition and an overall record of 7-3. Fannon concluded the regular-season campaign as the MIAA's leader with 7.5 sacks and was third in the league with 39 sack yards. He was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week on September 25 and is now a two-time All-MIAA honoree.

The Pete Schmidt Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award has been presented every year since 2001 honoring the legacy of Pete Schmidt, an Alma College alumni and Albion College football coach who died of cancer in 2000. SirQuarius Ball, this year's award recipient, is a four-year senior starter for the Comets. The wide receiver boasts a 3.657 cumulative grade-point average as a Sport and Recreation Management major. Ball was the 2023 Arthur Ashe Award winner with a 4.0 semester GPA. He was unanimously selected as a 2023 team captain and has served as a Leadership Council captain for two years. Ball has done tremendous work in his community both individually and with the team: volunteering with Bridgeport High School basketball and the football camp, serving at the Siren Shelter, working with the Charlotte Food Pantry to deliver meals to families in the community, helping clean campgrounds at Pine Lake and the city park in Olivet Township, interning with Olivet Middle School's eighth grade football team, and assisting with helping and cleaning the athletic training facilities.

Both Odin Soffredine of Alma and Jamon Gibson of Trine University became four-time All-MIAA honorees this season. Adrian College'sJonathan Sasiela, Hope College'sDylan Clem and Luke Marsh, and Trine's Xaine Kirby and Jackson Linback are now three-time All-MIAA players, while Albion's Fannon, Alma's Joshua Hernandez, Hunter Sanderson, St. John,Reese Townsend, and Eddie Williams, Hope's Cole Harger, Olivet's Ricky Williamson, and Trine's Kale Lawson and all receiving All-MIAA recognition for the second time in their careers.
