Broken Hill Aerated Water Manufacturers

Adams, Frank W. / Adams & Co. Pty Ltd (1931-1956) 46 Oxide Street

Later manufacturer who purchased the factory from R N J Fletcher in March 1931.
Frank Adams originally worked for Resch‟s and Fletcher in what was the original soft drink factory established
by Resch – he had worked there since 1923. Adams renovated the factory in August 1938 with new machinery,
including a bottling and washing plant. Also used pyro label softdrinks.

1. Marble – 7/10oz Niagara Patent aqua glass embossed “F W Adams / Broken Hill”. (Note: Existence of
any codds now in question and pending confirmation)

South Australian company [Wallaroo, Yorke Peninsula]: J Pascoe (Excelsior Iced Drink Saloon) listed as agent
for Broken Hill.

Barrier Cordial Company (1891-1894) Cobalt Street
Trautmann leased the factory from December 1892. The company struggled financially and tenders for purchase
of Barrier Cordial Factory were advertised in May-June 1894.

Berkholz, Charles (1891-1912) Thomas Street
Charles Berkholz was born at Tanunda (SA) and came to Broken Hill ~ 1889. He held the license for the
Gasworks Hotel at West Broken Hill for several years and shortly after commenced manufacturing cordials,
trading as the OK Cordial Factory.
His factory was in Crystal Street and destroyed by fire in 1912 (third fire in two years) He was also the licensee
at different stages of five local hotels including the Adelaide Club, Gasworks, Wilcannia Club (B.Hill) Grand
and Tarrawingee. He died in 1925 at Broken Hill

Berliner, Louis (1891-1900) Knox Street, South Broken Hill.
Listed as a brewer in trades directory – South Broken Hill Brewery. By 1902 Berliner had filed for bankruptcy.

Birbeck, W. H. (1905-14) Gossan Street, West Broken Hill.
Originally a baker [Federal Bakery, West Broken Hill]. In October 1905, Birbeck established an aerated water
manufactory adjacent to his bakery; advertisem*nts also indicated the factory produced vinegars, cordials,
sauces and pickles. By 1912, advertisem*nts indicate that Birbeck also had an interest in Jacka Bros Brewery
(Melrose, SA), possibly as an agent or branch for Broken Hill.

Broken Hill Cooperative Aerated Water Company Ltd (1890-95)
Following financial difficulties by May 1895; the plant and equipment were tendered for sale.

Broken Hill Ice Works (1892-93) Lane Street.
Manager: F Sabine.
Burton Brewery / Burton Brewing Co. (1891-1920) Bromide Street.
Later operating as The Burton Brewery Co Ltd. – see McIndoe & Co. The plant and equipment was advertised
for sale in April 1900. The factory was purchased by Simpson, Beaglehole and Co. of the Waverley Brewery in
May 1900; the sale included the leases of the South Australian Hotel, Railway Town and Peters‟ Hotel.

Carlisle & Co (1889-1890) Round Hill
The Aerated Water and Cordial factory was advertised for sale in January 1890 – no further details. Possibly
connected to Ernest Carlisle who was listed as a cordial manufacturer for Silverton in 1889-90.

Clem‟s Cordials (1960s+)
Used pyro labelled crown seals with „Kangaroo‟ tm. Rated:C
Manufactured drinks from 1956 until 1988, factory at Patton Street Broken Hill. Current owners still trade as a
drink/food distributors
Also had embossed 10oz C/S with Kangaroo. Rated: A

Clifford, R. (1890‟s) Brewer‟s Arms Hotel.
Advertised as a wholesale hop beer, horehound and ginger beer manufacturer.

Conlon, J. & Co.
Also held licences for several hotels, Licensee of the Mulga Hill and All Nations Hotels. Died in 1951 at Broken
Hill

Dominish, John (1898-99) Oxide Street
Originally held licence for Sydney Club Hotel; later listed as an aerated water manufacturer in trades directory.
Moved to Kalgoorlie (WA).
Eastman, John & Co (1889-1950s) Willyama Cordial Factory, Wolfram Street
Originally, Eastman had a partnership with Richard Frautnau trading as Eastman & Co. Eastman also held a
brewer‟s licence and was the licensee and/or owner of several hotels in Broken Hill.
Eastman died in 1913; however, the business continued trading as Eastman and Co into the 1950‟s –
Manager/Proprietor was Albert Sumsion.
Taken over by from Albert Sumsion by his son Mick in 1921 who operated it until the late 1950s

Operated a factory that was advertised for sale in May 1891. Branches at Silverton and Euriowa.
Operating 1886 - 1888 (Silverton and Purnamoota) 1888 - 1892? (Broken Hill)
Was in partnership with J.E.Hamilton briefly in early 1886
The Broken Hill Factory was in Chapple Street
Began an aerated water/cordial business at Collie Western Australia in 1915
Fairchild was also later listed as licensee for the Athletic Club Hotel.

Fletcher, Ronald Nicholas J. (1920-1931) 46 Oxide Street
Nephew of Emil Resch [changed his name after WW1]; he was the Manager of the former Resch‟s soft drink
factory from 1908; the soft drink factory side was sold to F W Adams while the Brewery was sold to Tooth‟s in
1931.
Licensee of the Palace Hotel from 1914 until 1920 and South Australian Hotel in 1921
Changed his surname from Resch to Fletcher in 1916, due to WW1 sentiment. His uncle Edmund (Lion
Brewery Wilcannia, Resch‟s Sydney) was actually interred in Holdsworthy camp, Sydney in 1917 along with
6000 others of German origin

Bottle:
1. Soda Syphon – clear round glass, etched „R N J Fletcher / Broken Hill NSW‟ inside oval badge with „lion
on barrell‟ tm in centre. Rated: H
2. Crown Seal – Indication of a crown seal produced after evidence of a cap was found recently

Freemasons Hotel Argent Street North.
Uncertain who was the licensee when the bottles were used.

Glenn, Walter Thomas Henry (1904-1915) Argent Street. Died 1915 in Broken Hill
Originally listed as a baker and operated the Niagara Tea Rooms and Central Reserve Kiosk.
Bottles:
1. Lamont – 10oz aqua glass embossed “W Glenn / Broken Hill” in 2 vertical lines down the bottle. “A”
basemark . Rated: XR

Godfrey, P.
Broken Hill and Katoomba: no further details.
Bottles:
1. Marble – 7oz One-way Pour, greenish-aqua glass embossed “H Godfrey Katoomba and Broken Hill” with
“Emu” tm on reverse. Rated: XR

Guinan, William (1910-12)

William Guinan [1865-1936] only operated the Crown and Anchor Hotel for a short period [1910-1912]. Prior
to that Guinane worked as a miner employed at the Proprietary Mine.

Hepburn, William (1888-15) Argent Street

William Hepburn arrived in Broken Hill in 1885 as one of the first pioneers. He ran a restaurant (1892 - 1906)
and confectionary shop (1907 - 1934, his death) both in Argent Street.

Information suggests he was a drink maker from 1888 onwards, constructing a new aerated water plant in 1908
which he sold to J.T. Lee (S.C.A.M.W. Co) in 1915. Advertised an “ANA Tonic” manufactured at the plant. In
December 1915, advertising indicates that the factory was now Silver City Mineral Water Company [late
Hepburn‟s].

“WH” Monogram in centre. Variations dependant on pottery. Rated: H

2. Horner's Patent – cylinder-shaped, aqua glass embossed “W Hepburn / Broken Hill” in 2 lines down the
bottle. Used brass cap to seal bottle/contents. Rated: XR

3. Lamont – 10oz aqua glass embossed “W Hepburn / Broken Hill” in 2 lines down the bottle. (Note:

Hince, Walter / Walter Hince Pty Ltd (1925-1946) Silver City Mineral Water Company. 480 Argent Street.

The Silver City Mineral Water Company was originally in operation by early 1920's, but the Hince ownership is
from the 1925-1946 period. Walter Hince previously managed the brewery; the company was later registered as
a Limited Company.

Walter Hince changed the name to Silver City Mineral Water Company in 1925 after he purchased the factory
from J.T. Lee (Silver City Aerated Mineral Water Company)
Was a director at the West End Brewery, Picton Flat from the early 1900s until 1918 (Closure)
Also ran Clayton‟s Barrier Brewery (non alcoholic) from the Argent Street factory
He died at Broken Hill in 1947

Johnson, James (1899-25) Pinnacles Road, Broken Hill West.
Originally listed as a fruiterer and later also cordial manufacturer – no further details.

Kitchen, R. E. A. (1928) 343 Argent Street.

Advertised as Broken Hill Agent for Schweppes.

Lee, John T. (1916-25)
Originally a hotelkeeper, Lee later operated Silver City Aerated Water Company. Purchased Hepburn‟s Argent
Street plant in 1916 and ran until 1925. Sold to Walter Hince
Some confusion with John Thomas Lees (1845 - 1918) who was a prolific hotel builder/licensee in Broken Hill
from 1886 until 1918
His Hotels included the Silver Spade,Oxford,Tatterstalls, Victoria, Commercial and The Catholic Club

Lindstroms, (1936-1950‟s) 163 Oxide Street
Operated a milk bar/café; by 1937 they were advertising their soft drinks. Moved to the corner of Gafney and
Creedon Streets in the early 1950s, became Dal‟s Cordials until the 1960s, upon closure plant and bottles
purchased by Clem Gillespie (Clem‟s Cordials)

Bottles:
1. Crown Seal Softdrink – 10 oz blueish-aqua glass embossed with “Wattle” tm. Rated: H
2. Crown Seal Softdrink – 26 oz blueish-aqua glass embossed with “Rose” tm. Rated: Pending
3. Soda Syphon – blue and apricot glass varieties, acid etched “Lindstrom‟s / Broken Hill” with “Rose” tm

Macdougall, B. (1900s)
Ormond Butler Llewelyn Macdougall was the licensee of the Wentworth Hotel 1909-1918 (taken over in 1909
from Oscar Radestock after he married Radestock‟s Daughter)
He was born at Wilcannia in 1881 and died at Sydney in 1947

1. Marble - 10oz Dobson Patent, aqua glass embossed „B / Macdougall‟ in 2 lines diagonally up the bottle.

Maguire, Michael Joseph (1890s) Oxide Street
Operated the Central Bakery 1888 - 1890, very little available info. Once a very rare Lamont, started appearing
around 10 years ago.
There are rumours of a 6oz variant and mention in Leith‟s Howie‟s book, however not confirmed

Masonic Hotel (1890-1909) Beryl Street.
See also T C Tait
Thomas Curie Tait moved to Broken Hill from Silverton (where he had a carpentry business) in 1888. He
became the licensee of the Masonic Hotel 172 Beryl Street from 1889 - 1894 and again from 1895 - 1908, in
1909 he took over the license of the Royal hotel at 336 Argent Street until 1911

Macindoe, Peter & Co. (1891-1900) Burton Brewery, Bromide Street
Macindoe arrived at Broken Hill in 1887 as a surveyor , James Sloan was a cordial maker at Silverton before
buying the Globe Hotel in 1890.
They formed a partnership in 1891 and began manufacturing drinks at the rear of the Hotel in Beryl Street, the
partnership dissolved in 1892

Original partnership between Macindoe and James Sloan was formally dissolved in October 1892; company was
continued on by Macindoe & Co. Also listed as Wine & Spirit merchants.

Charles Medlin moved to Broken Hill in 1908 from Minlaton S.A. where he had been a cordial manufacturer for
two years, he worked under Albert Sumsion at Eastman‟s cordial factory until around 1920. He ran his own
factory with his sons in Williams Street until 1925

Noonan, M. J. / Noonan Bros. (1905-19) Argent Street.

In June 1905, Noonan Bros acquired the hotel licence for the Globe Hotel from James Sloan; later they also held
the licence for the Grand Hotel (1908-1919). The Burton Brewery was located at the rear of the Globe Hotel and
shortly after their purchase, the Noonan Bros were manufacturing aerated waters. M J Noonan moved to
Adelaide in September 1919 and was the proprietor of the Southern Cross Hotel, King William Street.

Radestock, Oscar (1900-1909)
Previously at Kapunda, SA; Radestock moved to Broken Hill and acquired the license for the Wentworth Hotel
in January 1900. Shortly after Oscar Radestock commenced manufacturing cordials, etc. as well as operating
refreshment rooms in Argent Street.
By 1909 Radestock has left Broken Hill and expressed his intention to work for the American Manufacturing
and Importing Company in Sydney.

Resch, Emil / Resch & Co. (1888-1925) Argent Street

The Resch Brothers, Richard, Edmund and Emil arrived in Australia from Germany in 1863. In 1875 they
opened a cordial factory in Wilcannia which they officially named the Lion Brewery in 1879. In 1885 they built
their second Lion Brewery at Silverton in partnership with John Penrose. In 1888 Emil built a cordial factory at
Blende Street Broken Hill (which traded under his name until 1928). In 1898 Emil departed for Melbourne to
run the Carlton Brewery. His son Richard continued to run the business in Broken Hill with various managers
until 1928 when he changed the business name to R.N.J. Fletcher

Ryan and Co were originally Adelaide-based and had established a branch in Broken Hill. J A M Shelley was
listed as Manager. The factory was advertised for sale in July 1900.

Shelley, J. A. M. / Shelley‟s Aerated Waters (1893-1940‟s) Broken Hill West.

John Shelley arrived in Broken Hill in around 1890, He worked at Ryan's and MacIndoe's breweries and the
mines briefly before starting his own business in 1893 on the corner of the Silverton Road and Williams
Lane. He built a new factory in Morgan Street around 1896, then upgraded to a modern steam plant in 1907.
John ran the business with his sons Herb and Matt until he died in 1927. Herb continued to run the business
while Matt moved to Sydney in 1929 to expand the Shelley name. The business was run by various family
members in Broken Hill until it wound up in the 1970s

Penrose, John (1889-1899)
Was the licensee of the Queens Head Hotel in Wilcannia from 1879 until 1885, formed a partnership with Emil
Resch from the Lion Brewery Wilcannia and they opened a brewery (Lion) at Silverton in 1885. Due to their
arrangement the new brewery was in Emil Resch‟s name but all the bottles were embossed John Penrose, Resch
moved to Broken Hill in 1888 to start a new cordial factory leaving Penrose to manage the business. John
Penrose was an active public figure, eventually becoming the town‟s Mayor in the 1890s
Emil Resch took full control of the brewery in 1899 and it closed in 1900 after Silverton's population had
dwindled to under 300.
John Penrose died in Melbourne in 1908 aged 58.

Dal's Cordials, This business took over from Lindstrom's in the 1950s. The 10oz C/S is dated 1955. No other
bottles have been presently seen from this company and it is believed their operation continued until the early

including old Lindstrom‟s, which Clem re-labelled and used at his factory. Rated-VR

common seems to be the 26oz 3 Spot. They also bottled Pepsi under appointment. The factory was situated in

W.G.A, Wholesale Grocers Association had a store in Argent Street in the 1940s, they produced a clear and

Hynes Drink Factory, operated from the 1940s until the 1950s, Unknown location. They produced two styles
of 10oz and 26oz clear and aqua C/S bottles.

William Guinan [1865-1936] only operated the Crown and Anchor Hotel for a short period [1910-1912]. Prior
