During Technical.ly's Builder conference last week, I heard about a small change that went a long way.Vanguard's Janine Galen (she/her) said during a panel her company had been working to improve retention of workers from diverse backgrounds.Then, a cultural nuance emerged. As veteran workers transitioned into civilian life, turns out the corporate idea of pushing back on your bosses can seem a bit foreign when you're fresh out of the military.“They don’t realize they can say, ‘What’s the priority?’” Galen said.Addressing this — and other similar cultural barriers — let Vanguard boost its retention of workers from non-traditional and underrepresented backgrounds, a tall order for most technology organizations today.Attracting and retaining diverse talent is still very much a challenge in the tech field -- no matter how many layoff stories you read this year.
